    Posted: 29 Jan 2008 at 2:37am

Every medication usually receives three distinct names: the chemical name, the generic (or nonproprietary) name, and the brand (or proprietary or trademark) name.

For example:
Brand Name = ViagraA®

Generic Name = Sildenafil Citrate

Chemical Name =  5-[2-ethoxy-5-(4-methylpiperazin-1-ylsulfonyl)phenyl]-1- methyl-3-propyl-1,6-dihydro-7H-pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidin-7-one

The chemical name specifies the molecular structure of the drug and is usually long and complicated for general use.

The generic name is usually a shorthand version of the chemical name, structure or formula. Although the manufacturer or sponsor of the drug has the exclusive right of manufacture during the term of the drug's patent, it never owns the generic name. Once the drug's patent expires, other manufacturers may make the drug, referring to it by its generic name.

Although the generic name is in the public domain, the brand name is owned solely by the manufacturer. Trade names are usually catchy, often related to the drug's intended use, and relatively easy to remember, so that doctors will prescribe the drug and consumers will look for it by name.

Many people hesitate in using a generic drug believing that Brand names are superior in quality. In spite of the many myths surrounding the use of generic drugs, generic drugs contain exactly the same active ingredients, strength, and dosage form aˆ“ pill, liquid, injection - as the brand name equivalents!

Generic medicines might look different from brand name medications, however the appearance does not alter the effectiveness of the medicine.

These drugs are evaluated in the same way that brand name drugs are evaluated and must meet the same requirements.

Even if generic drugs are chemically identical to their branded counterparts, they are typically sold at substantial discounts from the branded price. A large portion of the cost of brand name drugs covers the high cost of research and development. Generic manufacturers do not have to duplicate the cost of research and marketing conducted by the original manufacturer. Therefore, the cost of the generic drug is usually less than the cost of brand medications.

With prescription drug costs constantly being raised you can control your healthcare costs by encouraging your physician to prescribe generic drugs when theyaˆ™re available and appropriate.

www.Generic-RX.net offers for sale Generic alternatives to brand name medications and allows thousand of people to save on their prescription medicines.

Branded medicines cost 85% more then generic. Saving money is important in our crysis times that's why paying 85% extra money only for brand names is irrational.

I personally don't buy any medicines because I don't need them.
But my parents who are not that young and healthy have to take medicines on a regular basis. I helped them to deal with online ordering at generic pharmacies to save. That's why I do know the difference. My parents take only generic medicines for last 3 years.

Hi! As I know there are many versions of a certain generic drug. When you decide to order a generic medicine how do you know what version is the best? Or do you find out this aspect only after trying each version?? LOL
